Review of industry funding from the CJNZWT

CresswellJackson1

Established in 2011 by the Directors of Wine Competition Ltd, Margaret Cresswell and Belinda Jackson, the Cresswell Jackson New Zealand Wine Trust has to date awarded over $40,000 towards industry research. The six recipients are incredibly varied and it is the belief of the Trustees that each will contribute to the ongoing success of the New Zealand wine industry.

REVIEW OF THE TRUST’S ACTIVITIES

The Cresswell Jackson New Zealand Wine Trust was established in 2011 to provide funding for the professional enhancement and continued success of the New Zealand wine industry. The Trust is the beneficiary of unopened bottles of wine that are surplus from the competitions run by Wine Competition Ltd. The Trust then auctions these bottles of wine with proceeds forming the basis for grants.

OBJECTIVES OF THE TRUST

The CJNZW Trust was established with two main objectives: • To provide funding for educational purposes for the advancement of knowledge within the New Zealand wine industry. • To provide funding for research projects that advance the knowledge within the New Zealand wine industry including oenological and viticultural practices. These may include, but not be limited to: o Quality improvement initiatives (for example viticultural, winemaking) o Sales and marketing initiatives (for example product presentation, market intelligence) o Technological initiatives (for example software development, mechanization) o Legal initiatives (for example intellectual property, international law)

FUNDS DISTRIBUTED TO DATE

1) The first grant the Trust awarded was to scientist Dr Wendy Parr of Lincoln University. In collaboration with Adelaide-based Phil Reedman MW, the University of Burgundy in France as well as London University and Oxford University in the UK, the overall goal of the project is to provide sound, scientifically-based information concerning specific aspects of wine tasting and wine judging. The study aims to investigate the influence of contextual variables on qualitative and quantitative aspects of sensory evaluations by testing whether wines are perceived as tasting ‘different’ under particular conditions.

2) The second was awarded to Associate Professor David J Burritt of the Department of Botany at the University of Otago to undertake research concerning the process of extracting phenolics during the winemaking process. Professor Burritt said, “The wine industry is incredibly important to the New Zealand economy. We are very grateful to receive this grant, which will be used to support our research investigating the potential for pulsed electric fields (PEF) technology to be used in the New Zealand wine industry.”

3) The third successful application was from the Centre for Science Communication, Stuart Professor of Science Communication, Lloyd Spencer Davis, to look into how the industry can better communicate the positive part that science plays in the creation of quality wines. Professor Davis said, “I am thrilled to receive funding from the Cresswell Jackson New Zealand Wine Trust. This support will allow us to film key components of a documentary that showcases the science and innovation of the New Zealand Wine Industry.”

4) The next grant was awarded to Petra King Phd, Senior Lecturer in Viticulture at EIT to continue to research the potential use of an anti transpirant spray at veraison to lower potential alcohol levels in wine. Petra said, “A big thank you for agreeing to make the funding contribution to our project. In the absence of funding from other sources, your decision has made the difference between having to terminate the study or its continuance. We will be able to answer questions posed by last year’s results as well as investigate seasonal influences on the treatments.”

5) Mike Trought, Principal Scientist at Plant and Food was awarded funding to support the research of management and environmental factors determining thiol concentration in Sauvignon Blanc – an important factor in delivering aroma.

6) The inaugural International Sauvignon Blanc Celebration was held in Marlborough the first week of February and the Trust was pleased to support an application by the organising committee to support the costs of one of the international speakers.

In conclusion, we continue to monitor the above initiatives while at the same time, extending our reach to ensure that as many relevant institutions as possible know of the Trust’s existence and can therefore apply for funds. It is our desire to encourage applications and award those that meet the criteria, within four weeks of receipt.

‘Trust announces Christmas present for the New Zealand wine industry’

Directors of Wine Competition Ltd, the company that owns and organises the Spiegelau International Wine Competition and Marlborough Wine Show, have established a Trust to fund initiatives designed to enhance the success of the New Zealand wine industry.

Margaret Cresswell and Belinda Jackson established Wine Competition Ltd in 2011as an independent company that owns and organises wine competitions and associated events in New Zealand.  Knowing that there were a significant number of unopened bottles following the judging process, the pair decided to establish a Trust to which these bottles were donated. The Trust then auctions the wine with the objective of returning the ensuing funds to the industry.

Trustee, Belinda Jackson explains, “Producers pay to submit their wines for the judging process and send us samples. Though we request the least number possible – just three bottles, we feel strongly that those not used should be returned to the industry somehow.” She continues, “The easiest way is to monetise them and then offer that money back in the form of funding for industry grants and scholarships.”

In addition to Cresswell and Jackson, two independent Trustees have been appointed. Financial Advisor, Ross Frater of Core Advice Ltd and grape grower Stuart Smith, former Chair of New Zealand Winegrowers.

After three years – six wine competitions and therefore six auctions – the Trust is now calling for funding applications from research and educational organisations. Applications are to be registered with the Trust by 17 January 2014 and the successful applicant will be announced on 31 January, 2014. ‘Giesen, Johanneshof and Villa Maria dominate 2013 Marlborough Wine Show awards’.

Family companies dominated the awards at the 2013 Marlborough Wine Show celebration dinner held in Blenheim on Saturday night with Giesen, Johanneshof Cellars and Villa Maria winning nine of the 14 awards presented.

In addition to 12 class trophies, there were two new awards – The Marlborough Wine Show Award for Vineyard Excellence which was presented jointly to Ara Wines and Villa Maria for their Seddon Vineyard and the Marlborough Museum Legacy Award which was presented to Johanneshof Cellars for their Gewurztraminer, vintages 2006, 2010 and 2012.

Johanneshof joint winemakers, Warwick Foley and Edel Everling said, “The Johanneshof team is elated to receive not only the Trophy for Champion Gewurztraminer but also the inaugural Marlborough Museum Legacy Award. In the 24 years since Johanneshof was established, we have always strived to produce wines of great harmony that not only evolve and unravel over time, but ultimately have the strength to be enjoyed for many years.” Warwick concludes, “We are thrilled to be recognised for producing such wines.”

Marcel Giesen, Director and Chief Winemaker of Giesen Wines said, “We are delighted with the three trophies for ‘The Fuder’ wines. “ He explains, “The idea was to showcase single vineyard sites in Marlborough and use 1,000 litre German oak barrels (‘Fuders’) to prove that a number of styles are possible with outstanding Marlborough fruit – both Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.”

Villa Maria Senior Marlborough Winemaker Jeremy McKenzie commented on the significance of a Riesling winning the top spot: “It’s often to the despair of winemakers that Riesling seems to be the poor cousin of Sauvignon Blanc; it’s a great varietal that I’d love to see more people enjoying. We’re absolutely stoked with the four trophies from the competition,” he said.

The Marlborough Wine Show was established in 2011 to showcase the sub-regions and style diversity of wines from the province.

Results reflect truly international flair of wine competition

New Zealand, Australia, Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, USA and Chile were among the medal-winning wines from the 2013 Spiegelau International Wine Competition judged in New Zealand last week.

New Zealand led the way with the biggest medal haul, due in part to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which yielded a total of 100 medals, 13 of them gold and 11 gold medals for Pinot Noir.

Australia showed strongly with their heartland varieties, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as with some excellent Hunter Valley Semillons.

Italy won medals for white, red and sparkling wines, as did France. Chile was rewarded for red wines while Spain and Portugal received medals for both red and fortified wines.

Reflecting on the international line up of entries, Chief Judge Mike DeGaris said, “It’s great to see distributors entering a range of their imported wines. It means wine lovers get a more complete guide to wines available in New Zealand.”Image

Following the judging, wines not required during the process were donated to the Cresswell Jackson New Zealand Wine Trust and then auctioned. Proceeds will be returned to the industry in the form of grants and scholarships towards the end of the year. Competition Director, Belinda Jackson said, “We are delighted to return the proceeds and support the enhancement of the New Zealand wine industry.”

Trophies will be announced at the awards dinner being held on Auckland on 9 August.

‘Unique line-up of International Judges for New Zealand’s Spiegelau International Wine Competition’

Judging of the third annual Spiegelau International Wine Competition takes place next week with over 1,000 wines entered.

From a total of 12 judges, three are flying in from Australia and one from Singapore to add their extensive experience to the eight-strong New Zealand team at this year’s  Competition. There are also eight associate roles given to those in the industry looking to increase their judging experience.

Joining regulars Ralph Kyte-Powell from Melbourne and Adelaide-based consultant Phil Reedman MW are Annette Scarfe, a newly minted MW based in Singapore and Nick Ryan, wine writer and commentator from Sydney.

Chief Judge, Mike DeGaris commenting on the appointments said, “This show always has a very strong judging line-up and with the addition of Nick and Annette we are in a perfect position to appraise the 1100 or so entries.”

Trophy sponsors also make for an impressive list and include Singapore Airlines, Silver Fern Farms, Caffe L’affare, Scenic Hotel Group, Liquorland, Antipodes Water Company and the Gow Langsford Gallery. Director Belinda Jackson says, “These companies share our vision of excellence. We are delighted to partner with such influential brands”.

The Awards Dinner and announcement of trophies is being held on 9 August in Auckland.

‘Entries open for the 2013 Spiegelau International Wine Competition’

This year’s event is again anticipating entries from all over the globe, culminating in a comprehensive, independent review of wines available on the New Zealand market.

Judges include a number of international guests such as Phil Reedman MW from Adelaide, Adrian Atkinson from the UK and Annette Scarfe MW from Singapore. Accompanying them will be some of New Zealand’s most experienced and respected judges, the majority of whom judge every year at this event, helping to provide consistency.

Trophy sponsors are a number of high profile companies and their brands including Singapore Airlines, Silver Fern Farms, Caffe L’affare, Scenic Hotel Group, Liquorland, Antipodes Water and the Gow Langsford Gallery.

The Spiegelau International Wine Competition provides a number of clear points of difference with other New Zealand-based wine shows:

  • 100% independent – the event is owned and organised by Wine Competition Ltd
  •  Judging is conducted using four, style-specific glasses ensuring the wines are appraised in the most authentic way
  •  Bottles of wine not required during the judging process are donated to the Cresswell Jackson New Zealand Wine Trust for auction and proceeds are returned to the New Zealand wine industry via grants and scholarships.
  • In recognition of the investment required to enter wine competitions, the Spiegelau International Wine Competition is offering a 10% discount for any companies entering more than 30 wines

Competition Director, Belinda Jackson says, “We are always looking for ways to improve the relevance and value of this event for all stakeholders; the wine industry, sponsors and wine consumers’.

‘Wine Competition Ltd announces 2013 dates for New Zealand shows’

Planning is underway for the two New Zealand-based shows owned and managed by Wine Competition Ltd with the announcement of dates for the 2013 events.

The 2013 Spiegelau International Wine Competition has been brought forward with judging being held 18 – 20 June while the Marlborough Wine Show will take place 23-24 October. Both events will be held in Marlborough.

Director, Belinda Jackson explains, “By bringing the international competition forward to a time when there are less shows will give it an added focus.” As regards the Marlborough Wine Show, Jackson says, “This event is about sub-regions and style diversity within Marlborough with the timing is set to coincide with the new vintage release.”

The Spiegelau International Wine Competition trophies will be announced at a dinner being held in central Auckland on 9 August and the Marlborough Wine Show celebration dinner and announcement of trophies will be held on 9 November at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

Wine Competition Ltd is the only 100% independent company that focuses exclusively on running shows. In addition, it is the only competition organiser that auctions bottles of wine not required during the judging process and returns proceeds to the industry via a Trust set up specifically for the purpose.

Press Release – 2012 Spiegelau International Wine Competition medal results announced

Sixty-three gold, 160 silver and 446 bronze medals were awarded at the second annual Spiegelau International Wine Competition held in Marlborough last week. Stand out classes included Methode Traditionnelle and Riesling with 12% of entries receiving gold medals.

Of the seven sparkling wine gold medals, six were from New Zealand including one from Central Otago.  The Sauvignon Blanc gold medals were dominated by the 2012 vintage reinforcing comments as to the quality of the fruit.

A number of wine producers were awarded multiple gold medals for their wines. They included New Zealand winemakers Villa Maria, Matua and smaller producer, Mount Riley.

Chief Judge, Mike DeGaris of Sydney said, “It was a pleasure to judge such a diverse range of wines, many of outstanding quality.” He continues, “There were a number of highlights, but Methode Traditionelle, Riesling, Chardonnay and European reds, showed very well, as did the 2012 vintage Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.”

Competition Director, Belinda Jackson commented, “The range of medal-winning wines will provide an excellent guide for wine lovers as each medal sticker indicates to the purchaser that the wine has been through a rigorous, independent evaluation.”

Gold medals will be presented and trophies announced at a special awards dinner on 5 October at The Northern Club, Auckland.
